Job Description:
Principal Highways Engineer
*Location: Hybrid (3 days WFH, 2 days in office)
*Job Type: Contract
*Rate: £40–£60 per hour (Umbrella)
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Principal Highways Engineer to join our Highways Development Management (HDM) team. This pivotal role supports the Local Plan site assessment process, focusing on evaluating the access potential of sites proposed for inclusion in the forthcoming Local Plan. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in highways engineering and transport planning, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
Day-to-day of the role:
*Assess proposed development sites for highway access potential and network capacity.
*Review planning applications and provide technical feedback on highway and transport implications.
*Analyse local plan data and fill in required criteria for site assessments.
*Liaise with internal teams, developers, and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with planning policy and design standards.
*Prepare technical reports and recommendations for inclusion in the Local Plan.
*Occasionally attend site visits to verify access feasibility.
*Contribute to the delivery of HDM objectives and support strategic planning initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
*Minimum HNC or Degree in Transport Planning / Highways Engineering or related discipline.
*Chartered / Incorporated Engineer status or Membership of a relevant Institution (desirable).
*Proven experience in Highways Engineering and Transport Planning.
*Background in Development Management or similar consultancy experience.
*Strong knowledge of local authority processes and planning policy.
*Familiarity with highway design standards, codes of practice, and relevant legislation.
*Experience using industry-related software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS).
*Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
*Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
*Ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
