Job Description:
Forensic Laboratory Officer
*Contract Type: Temporary, full time 37 hours
*Location: Hutton, Preston
*Salary: £13.28 per hour
Reed is looking for a Forensic Laboratory Officer on a temporary contract. This role is crucial in supporting the unit in the retrieval and recording of Fingerprint/Palm print, footwear, and indented writing evidence. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Fingerprint Laboratory Manager and alongside a dedicated team to maintain the integrity and continuity of evidence.
Day-to-Day of the Role:
*Ensure the integrity of exhibits and maintain continuity in the evidence chain.
*Independently assess the suitability of evidence to form an Evidence Recovery Plan (ERP).
*Conduct laboratory examinations according to standard operating procedures, enhancing, recovering, and recording evidence.
*Apply a forensic strategy to maximise evidence recovery and understand the sequential approach for examinations.
*Identify all evidence types and collaborate with specialised units to discuss ERP strategies.
*Participate in joint examination exercises and formulate strategies with other forensic units.
*Prepare chemical solutions for enhancement processes and ensure safe containment of chemical waste.
*Maintain stock of chemical reagents and manage the collection and disposal of clinical and chemical waste.
*Apply a wide range of physical and chemical processes in the laboratory and at crime scenes.
*Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
*Record evidence using Digital Imaging Equipment and enhance digital images for optimal presentation in court.
*Perform peer review and quality assurance of casework.
*Maintain detailed records of cases and exhibits on various digital systems.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
*Experience in a forensic laboratory setting is highly desirable.
*Knowledge of forensic science techniques and processes.
*Familiarity with the ’CAST Finger mark Visualisation Manual’ and other relevant forensic standards.
*Proficient in using digital imaging software and enhancing digital images.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*Ability to manage multiple tasks and work to tight deadlines.
