Tax Dispute Assistant Manager
Salary: £65,000 - £75,000

Summary
The Tax Dispute Assistant Manager plays a pivotal role within the accounting and tax advisory division, specializing in the resolution of complex tax disputes with regulatory authorities. This position is critical in safeguarding the organization’s financial integrity, ensuring compliance with evolving tax legislation, and minimizing exposure to penalties and interest. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned tax professional with a deep understanding of corporate taxation, audit defense strategies, and negotiation dynamics. You will lead the preparation and presentation of technical arguments, coordinate cross-functional teams, and represent the organization in high-stakes discussions with tax authorities. This role demands a strategic mindset, exceptional analytical abilities, and a proactive approach to risk mitigation. As a key contributor to the firm’s tax governance framework, you will ensure that dispute outcomes align with business objectives while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, ethics, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
*Lead the end-to-end management of tax disputes involving HMRC, international tax authorities or other regulatory bodies.
*Conduct in-depth analysis of tax assessments, appeals, and audit findings to identify strengths, weaknesses and strategic opportunities.
*Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including position papers, legal arguments and supporting evidence for dispute resolution.
*Represent the organization in negotiations, hearings, and settlement discussions with tax authorities, utilizing strong negotiation and communication skills.
*Collaborate with internal stakeholders—including finance, legal and compliance teams to ensure alignment on dispute strategy and risk posture.
*Monitor changes in tax legislation and case law to anticipate potential disputes and proactively advise on mitigation measures.
*Utilize SAP NetWeaver AS to manage tax data, track dispute timelines and ensure accurate reporting and audit readiness.
*Train and mentor junior tax professionals on dispute resolution techniques, documentation standards and compliance protocols.
*Maintain detailed records of all dispute activities, outcomes and lessons learned to support continuous improvement and knowledge retention.
*Ensure adherence to internal controls, data privacy regulations and corporate governance standards throughout all dispute processes.
Requirements
*Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; ACA, ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification preferred.
*Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in tax advisory, tax dispute resolution or corporate tax compliance.
*Proven track record in managing high-value tax disputes with HMRC or equivalent international tax authorities.
*Expertise in UK corporate taxation, including corporation tax, transfer pricing, VAT and indirect taxes.
*Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with a strong command of Microsoft Excel for complex financial modeling and data analysis.
*Hands-on experience with SAP NetWeaver AS for tax data integration, reporting and workflow management.
*Exceptional negotiation and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence outcomes in high-pressure environments.
*Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written communication abilities with attention to detail and accuracy.
*Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex cases under tight deadlines.
*Knowledge of tax audit defense strategies, appeal processes and litigation support frameworks.
*Experience in preparing and presenting technical tax arguments to senior management and external parties.
