Principal Legal Officer
*Hourly Rate: £50
*Location: Leeds, LS1
*Job Type: Hybrid, temp contract
We are seeking a Principal Legal Officer to join our team in Leeds. This role is crucial in providing high-quality legal services that support the council’s strategic objectives, particularly in the area of Children’s Social Care Law. The successful candidate will handle a substantial caseload of complex legal matters and represent the council in various legal proceedings.
Day-to-day of the role:
*Undertake and manage a substantial personal caseload of complex legal work, primarily focusing on children’s social care legal matters.
*Provide legal representation for council colleagues and other clients in tribunals, County Court, and Higher courts, as permitted.
*Conduct investigatory and preparatory work necessary for the effective presentation of cases in court.
*Draft and issue court proceedings and other legal documentation, including instructions to counsel.
*Provide expert legal advice and support to committees, offering guidance on complex matters both orally and in writing.
*Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal colleagues, external stakeholders, and parties to enhance service delivery.
*Stay updated with legislative and case law developments relevant to the council’s work and advise accordingly.
*Meet all professional requirements, such as those set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for personal development and standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
*Qualified Solicitor or Barrister entitled to hold a practising certificate, or FCILEX with Legal Executive Advocate Certificate (Family).
*Demonstrable experience in managing a complex personal caseload.
*Strong advocacy skills, with experience in handling complex contested hearings.
*Excellent communication skills and the ability to establish productive relationships at various levels.
*Ability to work flexibly across different locations and areas as required.
*Proficient in drafting clear and concise legal documents and conducting effective legal research.
*Knowledge of children’s social care law and local government law practices.
