SEMH teaching assistant wanted for Halifax SEN school - experience with PDA essential!
About the Role
Academics Recruitment is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a child with SEMH needs, with a particular focus on Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). This is for an immediate-start based in Halifax, ideal for a professional who understands the complexities of PDA and can provide calm, consistent and child-centred support.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide 1:1 or small-group support tailored to the child’s individual SEMH and PDA needs
* Use low-demand, relationship-based approaches to reduce anxiety and support engagement
* Implement strong, proactive behaviour management strategies in a calm, non-confrontational manner
* Create a safe, soothing and emotionally supportive learning environment
* Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to support individual education and behaviour plans
* Support emotional regulation, social development and positive learning behaviours
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
* Proven experience working as an SEMH Teaching Assistant or in a similar role
* Demonstrable experience supporting children with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
* Strong behaviour management strategies rooted in empathy, consistency and understanding
* The ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing needs
