We are partnering with a leading global insurer to hire a Senior Cargo Underwriter to join their expanding team. This is a key role with strong visibility, commercial autonomy, and the opportunity to influence the performance and direction of a well-diversified cargo portfolio.
About the Role
As a Senior Cargo Underwriter, you will take the lead in evaluating, pricing, and managing cargo insurance risks across marine, air, and land transportation. You will work closely with brokers, clients, portfolio managers, and internal teams to shape underwriting strategy and deliver sustainable, profitable growth. This role offers a blend of technical underwriting, relationship management, and portfolio oversight, along with the chance to mentor junior colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and underwrite cargo risks, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and appetite
* Price and negotiate terms for complex and high-value accounts
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
* Target preferred business through strong market and client understanding
* Monitor portfolio performance and contribute to strategic underwriting decisions
* Provide guidance and mentoring to junior underwriters
* Collaborate with claims and risk management teams to support loss ratio improvements
* Prepare reports and presentations on performance, trends, and strategy
* Support the Director with additional tasks to help achieve team objectives
Experience & Skills Required
* 5-8 years’ experience in cargo or marine underwriting, including at least 2 years in a senior role
* Strong technical knowledge of cargo products, policy wordings, and international regulations
* Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making abilities
* Experience managing complex accounts and multi-line portfolios
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Sound market awareness and understanding of risk appetite
* Ability to lead, mentor, and influence across teams
