About the Role
We are seeking a reliable, proactive and skilled Caretaker for a school in Streatham. This vital role ensures the pupils, staff and visitors can enjoy a safe, clean and well-maintained environment both indoors and outdoors.
The ideal candidate will take pride in maintaining high standards, have strong practical abilities, and enjoy contributing to the wider life of our school community.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Caretaker will:
*Ensure the school buildings and grounds are safe, clean and well-maintained.
*Carry out general repairs, maintenance and DIY tasks to support a safe working environment for pupils and staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Premises Maintenance
*Carry out ongoing repairs and odd-job work.
*Hang shelving, display boards and undertake minor improvements.
*Ensure the security of the school buildings and grounds.
*Liaise with external contractors on site.
*Receive and distribute deliveries, checking delivery notes.
*Monitor and order stock items (e.g., tissues, soaps, bulbs, batteries).
*Oversee timely waste management and recycling.
*Organise and maintain records for water management, pest control and waste management.
*Act as a trusted Key Holder, including responding to alarm call-outs.
*Uphold high standards of health, safety and cleanliness across the site.
Grounds Maintenance
*Clear leaves and litter from paths and playgrounds.
*Sweep or hose down muddy paths.
*Cut back overhanging shrubs.
*Clear weeds and maintain tidy entrance areas.
*Regularly inspect the perimeter and remove litter.
*Ensure paths and playgrounds are safe by clearing snow, ice and debris.
Health, Safety & Compliance
*Take reasonable care for personal and others’ health and safety.
*Conduct risk assessments and maintain accurate records.
*Ensure equipment is maintained in line with statutory requirements.
*Report concerns promptly to the Senior Leadership Team.
*Always complete tasks safely and responsibly.

Person Specification
Qualifications
*Good numeracy and literacy skills
*Full driving licence
Experience
*Experience supporting the maintenance of buildings or premises
*Transferable maintenance/DIY experience
*Knowledge of health & safety policies and codes of practice
*Ability to safely use and store tools and equipment
Skills & Knowledge
*Strong teamwork and the ability to work independently
*Good communication skills with staff, contractors and suppliers
*Understanding of school roles and responsibilities
