Our client is one of the UK’s largest independent automotive and commercial vehicle groups, operating nationwide and ranked within the top tier of UK dealer networks. With a workforce of several thousand employees and a turnover exceeding £1bn, they are a major player in their sector.

Due to continued growth, they are now seeking a proactive, detail-focused Group Payroll Assistant to support the accurate and timely delivery of payroll and provide an excellent service experience throughout the full payroll cycle.

The Group Payroll Assistant will form part of a small, longstanding team where collaboration is key.

Overview

As Group Payroll Assistant, you’ll play a pivotal role in the payroll function and support the smooth running of the Group’s end-to-end payroll processes.

Working closely with the Payroll Manager and wider payroll team, your work will directly impact the accuracy of payroll, compliance with legislation, and the experience of employees across the business.

Key Responsibilities

*Support accurate payroll processing - Help ensure all employee pay runs are processed correctly, including permanent changes, variable pay, starters, leavers and adjustments, so colleagues are always paid accurately and on time. Manual calculations of statutory payments (SSP/SMP/SPP).
*Take ownership of monthly routines - Complete month-end reporting tasks and site reconciliations to ensure payroll records are fully reviewed and sign-off is achieved ahead of deadlines.
*Provide excellent customer service - Act as a reliable point of contact for payroll-related questions, supporting colleagues with professionalism and clear communication.
*Support compliance & statutory obligations - Help maintain compliance with HMRC requirements for tax, National Insurance and statutory deductions; assist with pension auto-enrolment duties.
*Manage system data and records - Maintain accurate data within the HR/payroll system and assist with periodic data audits to ensure integrity across platforms.
*Work collaboratively with teams - Work with HR, finance and operational teams to ensure payroll information is up to date and aligned with wider business processes.
*Contribute to continuous improvement - Provide practical insights and suggestions to improve payroll processes, accuracy, and efficiency over time.


Skills & Experience Required

*Have 2-3 years’ payroll experience, or demonstrable experience in a payroll support role with a large payroll run.
*Are self-motivated and keen to learn, with a willingness to develop your payroll and finance knowledge further.
*Have good organisational skills and enjoy working with accurate and detailed information.
*Are a team player who supports colleagues and builds strong working relationships.
*Are confident working with IT systems , experience with MHR iTrent or payroll software is desirable, but not essential.
*Communicate clearly, professionally, and with a customer-centric mindset.
