Job Description:
This organisation is seeking a Payroll Team Leader to join their dedicated payroll function in Milton Keynes, offering a competitive salary of £50,000. This role presents an exciting opportunity for you to make a meaningful impact within a high-volume, multi-site environment, where your expertise will be valued and your commitment to service excellence will be recognised.
What you’ll do:
As Payroll Team Leader based in Milton Keynes, you will be entrusted with overseeing the day-to-day delivery of high-volume monthly payroll operations. Your role will involve close collaboration with both HR and Finance teams as you guide a small group of dedicated payroll professionals. You will be responsible for ensuring accuracy in processing employee data-such as new starters, leavers, pay changes-and statutory payments while maintaining strict compliance with UK legislation. Your ability to reconcile complex reports and support audit activities will be essential for maintaining transparency and accountability. By stepping in during absences of senior management, you will help sustain seamless operations. Success in this role requires not only technical proficiency but also a nurturing approach that supports colleagues’ development and fosters continuous improvement across payroll systems.
*Assist in managing the end-to-end payroll process for a large workforce spread across multiple sites, ensuring all aspects are handled efficiently and accurately.
*Provide guidance and oversight to payroll team members, fostering a supportive environment that encourages growth and collaboration.
*Ensure accurate and timely processing of starters, leavers, pay changes, and statutory payments such as PAYE, NI, pensions, SSP, SMP, maintaining compliance at all times.
*Reconcile detailed payroll reports each month and liaise with the Finance department regarding monthly reporting requirements, journal entries, and resolving queries promptly.
*Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory compliance requirements to ensure all processes adhere to current regulations.
*Support both internal and external audits by preparing clear documentation that meets compliance standards and facilitates smooth audit procedures.
*Work collaboratively with HR and other departments to identify opportunities for improving systems and processes related to payroll operations.
*Step in for the Payroll Manager during periods of absence to maintain operational continuity and uphold service standards.
*Contribute proactively to problem-solving within the team by identifying issues early and implementing effective solutions that benefit both employees and the organisation.
What you bring:
In the Payroll Team Leader position based in Milton Keynes, your proven track record in managing high-volume payrolls will set you apart as an invaluable asset to the organisation. Your deep understanding of UK statutory requirements ensures every aspect of payroll is processed correctly while your organisational skills allow you to manage multiple priorities without compromising quality. You bring empathy into your interactions with colleagues-mentoring junior staff members so they feel supported-and work collaboratively across departments to drive improvements. Your ability to communicate clearly helps resolve queries quickly while maintaining positive relationships throughout the business. Experience gained from large organisations or similar environments will further enhance your effectiveness in this role.
*Significant experience working within a high-volume payroll environment where accuracy and timeliness are paramount.
*A strong working knowledge of UK payroll legislation including PAYE, National Insurance contributions, pensions administration, Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), and other statutory payments.
*Proven experience supervising or mentoring payroll team members in a collaborative setting focused on shared success.
*Exceptional attention to detail combined with a methodical approach to organising tasks and managing competing priorities effectively.
*A dependable team player mindset who thrives on supporting others while contributing positively to group objectives.
*A proactive attitude towards problem-solving that enables you to identify challenges early and implement practical solutions for improved outcomes.
*Excellent interpersonal skills that facilitate effective communication with colleagues across HR, Finance, and other departments.
*Experience supporting internal or external audits through preparation of compliant documentation is highly desirable.
*Familiarity with payroll systems used within large organisations would be beneficial but is not essential.
