Job Description: Payroll Officer (Fixed-Term)
Salary: £30,000 per annum
Contract: Fixed-Term (12 months or as required)
Department: HR / Finance
Reports to: Payroll Manager / HR Manager
Role Purpose
To deliver an accurate, timely and customer-focused payroll service for employees, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, policies, and audit standards. The Payroll Specialist will support end-to-end payroll processing, maintain employee payroll records, and act as a first point of contact for payroll queries.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
*Process the monthly payroll accurately and on schedule.
*Ensure correct calculation of pay, overtime, enhancements, sick pay, parental leave, mileage and other allowances.
*Maintain and update payroll systems with new starters, leavers, contractual changes and salary adjustments.
*Check and verify timesheets, rota information, and manager approvals.
*Administer pension contributions and deductions.
Compliance & Audit
*Ensure all payroll activities comply with HMRC legislation, including PAYE, NI, statutory payments and RTI submissions.
*Support year-end processes such as P60s, P11Ds and audit requests.
*Maintain accurate, secure employee records in line with GDPR.
Customer Service
*Act as the first point of contact for pay-related queries from employees and managers.
*Provide clear, professional advice on payroll matters, policies, and statutory entitlements.
*Liaise with HR, Finance and external bodies (e.g., pension providers, HMRC) to resolve issues.
Systems & Process Improvement
*Use payroll and HR systems effectively, ensuring data integrity and timely updates.
*Contribute to continuous improvements in payroll procedures and workflows.
*Support training of new staff or managers in payroll processes when required.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
*Experience in end-to-end payroll processing, ideally in a medium/large organisation.
*Knowledge of UK payroll legislation (PAYE, NI, statutory sick pay, maternity/paternity pay, pensions).
*Strong numerical and accuracy skills.
*Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
*Proficiency with payroll software and Microsoft Office (Excel in particular).
*Ability to work to strict deadlines and manage competing demands.
Desirable
*Knowledge of HR/payroll integrated systems.
