Payroll Assistant
Cambridge (hybrid)
£30,000-£34,000 per annum
The Role
We are looking for a detail-driven Payroll Assistant to support the accurate and timely delivery of the monthly payroll. You will play a key role in ensuring employees and third parties are paid correctly and on time, while maintaining full compliance with HMRC legislation, company policies, and data protection requirements.
Working as part of a collaborative payroll and wider people team, you will provide advice and guidance across the employee lifecycle, handle payroll queries, and contribute to a high-quality, cost-effective payroll service.
Key Responsibilities
*Process payroll end-to-end, ensuring all deadlines are met
*Carry out manual payroll calculations including SSP, SMP, tax, NI and overpayments
*Support year-end processes, including production of P11D/P9D
*Maintain accurate absence records and employee payroll data
*Manage statutory payments, attachment orders, deductions and company benefit schemes
*Process payroll changes including new starters, leavers, salary sacrifice, pensions and attachments of earnings
*Respond to employee queries relating to pay, timesheets, absences and payroll calculations
*Act as a first point of contact for general payroll queries on a rotational basis
*Ensure compliance with current UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
*Maintain accurate records in line with GDPR, data protection and employment law
*Support data management activities including data cleansing and document retention
*Keep up to date with legislative changes and best practice
*Undertake any other relevant duties as required
Skills & Experience
*Proven experience in payroll processing
*Strong knowledge of current HMRC legislation
*Ability to manage UK payroll processes independently
*Excellent numeracy, literacy and attention to detail
*Strong Excel skills and overall computer literacy
*Highly organised with the ability to work to strict deadlines
*Clear and confident communicator, both written and verbal
*Proactive, motivated and able to use initiative
*Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
*Quick learner with a strong service-focused mindset
Desirable
*Experience using the iTrent payroll system (advantageous but not essential)
Working Pattern
This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with 2 days per week in the Cambridge office and 3 days working from home, rotating to meet business needs and key payroll processing times.
