Highways Safety InspectorLocation: On behalf of a Local Authority
Contract Length: 1.5 months (with potential for extension)

Aatom Recruitment are currently seeking a Highways Safety Inspector to work on behalf of a Local Authority. This is a short-term contract opportunity with the possibility of extension, ideal for an experienced highways professional.
Role OverviewThe successful candidate will support the Highways Division in meeting service delivery, legislative, and council policy requirements. The role involves inspecting highway infrastructure, supervising highway and public realm works, and supporting the delivery of highways projects.
Please note: This role involves long periods of walking and standing on-street in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities*Understand and apply legislation relating to highway authority highway networks
*Plan, coordinate, and carry out routine and reactive highway inspections
*Assess defects using both dimension-based and non-dimension-based inspection approaches
*Determine risk levels and escalate or de-escalate repair priorities accordingly
*Use data capture devices and computer-based systems to update asset registers, inventories, condition surveys, and work instructions
*Apply core principles of highway asset management
*Coordinate works with internal and external bodies to avoid conflict and duplication
*Liaise directly with customers and stakeholders
*Create small patching programmes for approval by maintenance engineers
*Update highways inventory records following completion of works
*Represent the Council by providing evidence in a Court of Law where required in relation to incidents on the public highway
Job Context*The role sits within the Highways Division, reporting to the Principal Engineer, Engineering Services Manager, or Structures Manager
*The Highways Division forms part of the Council’s Environment Directorate, acting as the Highway Authority
*Occasional work outside normal hours may be required, including council meetings and site visits
*The postholder may represent the Council with external agencies and stakeholders
*Responsibilities include managing and monitoring financial and operational records
*No direct budgetary responsibility or line management duties
