Interim Category Manager – Place
Based in South East, hybrid
Length: 4 months initially

We are looking for an experienced Category Manager to manage sub-categories within the Place category portfolio, working closely with Directorates, Services, and the Category Lead.
The purpose of the role is to deliver value for money outcomes, transform how services are delivered, and maximise commercial performance across the full supplier lifecycle.
This is a high-impact role with responsibility for shaping and delivering robust sub-category strategies across Capital, Waste, or Highways, within a category that manages £180m–£200m of annual spend across 300+ suppliers.
Key Responsibilities include:
*Develop, implement, and maintain robust sub-category strategies within the Place portfolio
*Optimise performance across cost, quality, delivery, resilience, and responsiveness
*Lead commercial best practice for the procurement of Capital, Waste, or Highways spend
*Manage and deliver complex commercial projects and procurements
*Manage supplier relationships across the full supplier lifecycle, from sourcing to contract management and exit
*Provide commercial insight, challenge, and leadership to support informed decision-making
*Contribute to the overall success of the Place category, which includes significant spend in highways, construction, and waste
Experience and knowledge required:
*Significant experience in commercial, procurement, or category management within local government or the public sector
*CIPS Qualification
*Proven ability to manage high-value spend categories and deliver value for money
*Strong understanding of procurement and commercial best practice, particularly in Capital, Highways, Construction, or Waste
*Confident stakeholder manager, able to influence and lead at all levels
*Knowledge of relevant procurement regulations (e.g. PCR / public procurement frameworks)
