Job Title: Nursery Cook
Location: Durham
Hours: Full time
Reports to: Nursery Manager
The role is to start ASAP and expected to last for 3 months as it is planned sickness cover.
Overview
I am supporting a Nursery in Durham who require a caring, organised, and reliable Nursery Cook to join their early years team from mid-February for a 3-month period. You will be responsible for preparing healthy, nutritious meals and snacks for children aged 0–5, ensuring all dietary needs, allergies, and food safety standards are met. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys creating balanced menus, thrives in a busy environment, and is passionate about supporting children’s wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
*Plan and prepare healthy, balanced meals and snacks in line with nursery policies and children’s dietary requirements.
*Maintain accurate allergen management and ensure all menus comply with allergy and food intolerance needs.
*Follow Food Hygiene, Safer Food, Better Business, and Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidelines.
*Ensure the kitchen always remains clean, hygienic, and well-organised.
*Carry out daily cleaning tasks, including washing up, sanitising surfaces, and managing waste.
*Monitor and manage stock levels, including ordering ingredients and storing items safely.
*Work within a set budget, reducing food waste where possible.
*Keep detailed records including temperature checks, cleaning logs, and food diaries.
*Support the nursery team with special events (e.g., themed days, celebrations).
*Build positive relationships with staff and communicate clearly about meal times and dietary information.
Requirements
*Experience working as a cook in a nursery, school, care setting, or similar environment
*Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate
*Knowledge of nutrition for young children and allergen management.
*Ability to plan menus and adapt recipes.
*Strong organisational and time-management skills.
*A positive, calm, and flexible approach.
*A genuine interest in supporting children’s healthy development.
*Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one).
