Job Description:
Your new company
We are recruiting on behalf of Birmingham City Council, a well-established local authority dedicated to providing safe, well-maintained buildings and facilities across the city. Due to ongoing service needs, several Caretaker positions are now available in multiple locations.
Your new role
As a Caretaker, you will be responsible for ensuring that council buildings and their surrounding areas are kept in excellent condition. Your role will involve carrying out general maintenance tasks, completing minor repairs, and supporting essential cleaning duties to ensure each site remains safe and presentable. You will be expected to follow all health and safety procedures, check that fire exits remain clear, and make sure that windows and doors are secure, particularly when buildings must be evacuated. Some roles include the operation of council vehicles, including tipper trucks. For those positions, a full UK driving licence is essential. For others, driving is not required.
What you’ll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you will need an enhanced DBS or the willingness to obtain one, along with practical experience in caretaking, facilities support, or a similar hands-on environment. You should be reliable, able to work independently, and confident in following health and safety guidelines. If applying for a driving-based role, you must hold a valid full UK driving licence. You must pass compliance checks before onboarding onto this role, including referencing checks on your two most recent employments.
What you’ll get in return
You will receive a competitive hourly rate of £12.60 plus holiday allowance, totalling £14.12 per hour, along with a 3-month ongoing contract that may be extended. This role offers a varied working day, the chance to support essential services within Birmingham, and valuable experience within a respected public sector organisation. This cannot be guaranteed, but there may be potential in the future to apply for a permanent opportunity if this becomes apparent in your team.
