Job Description:
Interim HR Manager – Schools
Based in London, hybrid working
Length: 3 months initially
IR35 status: Inside
We are looking for an HR Manager to serve as the principal HR adviser for schools within the Education Directorate, delivering expert, high-level guidance to maintained schools on all HR matters. The role upholds statutory requirements, supports effective employee relations, and ensures the consistent and compliant application of pay, conditions and HR policies.
Key Responsibilities:
*Provide high-level HR advice and guidance to school leaders, governing bodies and senior education stakeholders.
*Lead on complex employee relations cases, including capability, grievance, disciplinary, dismissal and negotiated exits.
*Interpret and advise on education-specific employment frameworks, including STPCD, the Burgundy Book, and Green Book terms and conditions.
*Support organisational change processes, restructures and workforce planning.
*Work collaboratively with trade unions, leading on consultation, negotiation and conflict resolution.
*Develop strong partnerships with schools and education leaders, promoting best practice and proactive HR solutions.
Skills, experience and knowledge required:
*Demonstrable experience providing senior-level HR advice within an education, local authority or wider public-sector environment
*Proven track record of handling a wide range of complex employee relations cases, including dismissals, capability, grievances and negotiated exits
*Strong understanding of teachers’ and school-based staff employment frameworks (STPCD, Burgundy Book and Green Book)
*Hands-on experience of working directly with schools, governing bodies, and senior education leaders
*Proven experience of trade union consultation and negotiation
*CIPD Level 5 or equivalent professional experience
