PMLD Teaching Assistant – Special Needs School
Location: Lambeth
Working Hours: 08:00 am – 16:00 pm
Salary: £90 - £110
Are you a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)?
We are seeking a caring and patient PMLD Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and forward-thinking special needs school. The Role:As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will support a small, well-supported class of pupils with complex needs, assisting in delivering highly individualised learning activities that promote communication, sensory engagement, and personal development. Working closely with the class teacher, therapists, and medical staff, you’ll ensure that every learner’s needs are met holistically in a safe and stimulating environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport Personalised Learning: Assist in delivering engaging, differentiated activities that support sensory, physical, and communication development.
Holistic Support: Help develop pupils’ communication, independence, social interaction, and emotional well-being.
Collaborate with Specialists: Work alongside teachers, therapists, support assistants, and healthcare professionals to meet each pupil’s physical and educational needs.
Assistive Communication: Support the use of tools such as PECS, Makaton, and AAC to promote expressive and receptive communication.
EHCP Support: Contribute to implementing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), supporting pupils to work towards their targets.
Behaviour and Care Support: Maintain a positive, safe classroom environment, supporting learners with physical needs, personal care, and emotional regulation where required.
Track Progress: Observe and record pupil progress, celebrating achievements and sharing feedback with the class teacher.
Family Engagement: Support communication with parents and carers when appropriate, sharing positive updates and successes.
What We’re Looking ForTo be successful in this role, you will need:
*Experience working with pupils with PMLD, SLD, or complex SEND needs (school-based experience preferred).
*A compassionate, patient, and adaptable approach with a strong understanding of sensory learning.
*Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with staff and families.
*Knowledge of assistive technologies and alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS) is desirable.
*A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable pupils.
*Relevant qualifications in education or SEND support are desirable but not essential.
