Job Description:
Position: Interim Payroll Officer
Location: South East London (5 days per week on-site)
Contract: Interim – until end of June
Excellent Multi Academy Trust in South East London seeking an experienced and detail-driven Interim Payroll Officer to support their central HR function during a period of transition and improvement.
Following recent centralisation of HR and payroll across their secondary schools, they are restructuring processes, addressing legacy issues, and strengthening payroll capability. A recent payroll audit has highlighted areas that now need focused attention, requiring additional support to ensure accuracy, stability and exceptional service across the Trust.
The Role
You will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and accurate delivery of payroll for approximately 650 monthly-paid staff, plus a small number of casual workers. This is a hands-on, detail-focused role ideal for someone who enjoys working with data, systems, and process accuracy.
Key responsibilities include:
*Managing the payroll inbox and processing incoming data
*Checking, validating and inputting absence information
*Processing overtime claims and ensuring correct authorisations
*Reviewing and processing staff expenses
*Supporting corrections and resolving issues arising from historical payroll errors
*Assisting the Payroll Manager in responding to audit actions
*Ensuring data accuracy within NeoPeople (our iTrent-based system)
This role requires someone who is numerate, confident working with systems, and comfortable at pace—someone who can use their head while dealing with detailed, high-volume processing tasks.
What We’re Looking For
*Strong payroll administration experience, ideally within education, multi-site, or complex organisations
*Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
*Confident working with HR/payroll systems (experience with iTrent/NeoPeople is a bonus)
*A proactive problem-solver who can help get things back on track
*Someone comfortable handling confidential information and working collaboratively with HR colleagues
