CassonX have abroad remit on what we are looking to identify, and that is because it is all about the talent and personality of the person at the start of their career. Whist degree education and someone who is mathematically minded is needed to fit in, and there is obvious preference to those who offer some kind of cash management / funding, optimisation, collateral or even Treasury Operations experience in a buy- or sell-side company, the client is willing to consider those coming from any Operations or Middle Office background, if you are at the start of your career boasting at least 6 months work experience. They are looking for someone who is a special talent, with an appreciation to learn programming or machine learning in a role, but preference will be given to those at the start of their careers coming from a varied Operations role in a Hedge Fund or Prime Brokerage Middle Office role.
What is most important is being able to showcase a mentality that would be successful in aptitude assessments and mental arithmetic. This might be demonstrable in education as part of a degree where you have covered statistics or even quant focussed modules. Being able to work things out, methodically, and in correct order, will be able to showcase natural logic to working our problems. That’s why coding skills and appreciation of VBA, Python and SQL are deemed favourable but not essential. Being able to identify and then document an error/issue, create a code to improve/automate, check the code works, and then test it, is a prime way to demonstrate logical thinking.
This very broad role is very important for the company, as it’s the first line in the Operations workflow. Partnering closely with the Front Office to make sure they understand their cash positions at all times, you will experience all things to do with Treasury, managing their cash positions and optimising them, dealing with margin movements and wider collateral, and funding all trades that take place. This role will see you automate and enhance processes, and provide further controls to all Operations and Middle Office responsibilities.
