Investment Director - Net Zero

Location: Edinburgh or Glasgow (Hybrid working)
The Scottish National Investment Bank is seeking an experienced Investment Director - Net Zero to lead the origination and execution of investments that support Scotland’s transition to a net zero economy.
Reporting to the Executive Director - Sustainable Investment, this is a senior leadership role within the Investment Origination function. You will be responsible for leading a high-quality investment pipeline across priority Net Zero sectors, delivering risk-adjusted financial returns alongside measurable mission impact.
This role sits at the forefront of the Bank’s purpose-led investment activity and offers the opportunity to shape Scotland’s Net Zero investment ecosystem at a national level.

Key Responsibilities
Investment Leadership & Delivery
*Lead the origination, structuring, negotiation and execution of equity and debt investments aligned to the Bank’s Net Zero mission.
*Manage and prioritise a dynamic pipeline of investment opportunities across sectors including energy transition, power generation, climate technology, circular economy and alternative fuels.
*Ensure all investments meet the Bank’s risk, return and mission impact requirements.
Governance, Risk & Execution
*Oversee preparation of high-quality Investment Committee papers, ensuring full compliance with the Bank’s investment approval process.
*Structure and negotiate investment terms to deliver appropriate risk-adjusted returns and support achievement of the Bank’s target rate of return.
*Ensure close collaboration with Governance, Risk, Legal & Compliance colleagues to identify, assess and manage financial, regulatory and mission risks.
*Manage relationships with external due diligence providers and legal advisers to ensure timely and robust transaction execution.
Portfolio & Lifecycle Management
*Ensure the smooth transition of investments to the Portfolio Management team post-completion and continue to support investments throughout their lifecycle.
*Maintain accountability for the performance of investments originated by your team, contributing to the overall strength of the Bank’s portfolio.
Leadership & Ecosystem Development
*Lead and develop a small team of investment professionals, providing coaching, oversight and on-the-job development.
*Build and maintain senior-level relationships across Scotland’s Net Zero and energy investment ecosystem, including developers, supply chain partners, institutional investors, banks and advisers.
*Represent the Bank at conferences, industry forums and external events, acting as a senior ambassador for the Bank’s Net Zero mission.
Key Skills and Experience
*Significant professional experience in Net Zero investment, sustainable finance, energy infrastructure or the wider energy supply chain.
*Proven market networks within relevant Net Zero sectors and the ability to further develop Scotland’s investment ecosystem.
*Proven experience leading complex investment transactions from origination through to completion.
*Demonstrated ability to manage investment portfolios and oversee performance over time.
*Effective team leader with the ability to manage workloads, develop talent and foster collaboration.
*Highly organised with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*Degree qualified in Business, Finance, Law or a related discipline; a professional qualification (e.g. CA, CFA or equivalent) is highly desirable.
*Alignment with the Bank’s missions and values, with a clear commitment to delivering positive economic and environmental impact for Scotland.
