A well-established organisation based in Knowsley is seeking an experienced Payroll Officer to join its Finance team.
This is a standalone payroll position responsible for managing both weekly and monthly payroll in partnership with an external payroll bureau. The role works closely with Finance and HR to ensure payroll is accurate, compliant and delivered to strict deadlines.
The Role The Payroll Officer will coordinate the end-to-end payroll process across weekly and monthly cycles. Payroll is outsourced to a bureau, and you will be responsible for collating, validating and submitting payroll data, reviewing returned reports and ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations.
This role is heavily Excel-based. A strong working knowledge of Excel is essential, as a large proportion of payroll data consolidation and validation is managed via spreadsheets.
Key Responsibilities:
* Coordinate weekly and monthly payroll with the external payroll provider
* Collate and validate payroll data using Excel
* Consolidate timesheets and payroll adjustments
* Review payroll reports and resolve discrepancies
* Process starters, leavers, tax code changes and earnings attachments
* Administer statutory payments (SMP, SSP, SPP)
* Manage allowances, benefits and payroll adjustments
* Post payroll journals and support month-end processes
* Process expense and subsistence claims
* Ensure compliance with PAYE, NIC and HMRC requirements
* Respond to payroll queries from employees and managers
* Maintain accurate payroll records for audit purposes
Monday is primarily focused on weekly payroll processing, with the remainder of the week dedicated to monthly payroll administration, reconciliations and reporting.
About You To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
* Experience processing weekly and monthly payroll
* Strong knowledge of HMRC regulations, PAYE and statutory payments
* Advanced Excel skills, including formulas and VLOOKUPs
* High attention to detail and numerical accuracy
* Ability to meet strict payroll deadlines
* Strong communication skills and ability to liaise with Finance and HR
Desirable:
* Experience working with an outsourced payroll bureau
* Experience producing payroll reports
* Proactive and process-focused mindset
Salary & Benefits * £33,000-£35,000
* 37.5 hours per week (8:30am-5:00pm)
