Job Description:
Senior Stress Engineer
Lead structural and mechanical analysis across a range of complex, highly regulated projects.
About the Role
You will work closely with design engineers to ensure concepts and detailed designs are structurally sound, fit for purpose, and optimised for manufacture. The role involves producing and reviewing hand calculations, supporting FE analysis, influencing early-stage design decisions, and acting as the internal specialist for design substantiation.
You will also help develop consistent analysis methods, mentor junior engineers, support project planning, and contribute to continuous improvement across the engineering function.
Key Responsibilities
*Carry out hand calculations and FEA to substantiate mechanical and structural designs
*Review and produce analysis documentation
*Provide technical input during conceptual and scheme design phases
*Act as the internal expert for analysis activities and subcontracted work
*Support design-for-manufacture and cost-reduction initiatives
*Mentor engineers and support development of standard analysis procedures
*Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory and data-protection requirements
*Occasional UK and overseas travel
Skills & Experience
*Strong background in stress analysis and hand calculations (e.g., Mathcad)
*Knowledge of BS EN 13001, BS 2573, Eurocode 3
*Experience within highly regulated environments (nuclear preferred)
*Ability to interrogate and interpret mechanical design inputs
*Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) and FEA software (ANSYS/ABAQUS/NASTRAN)
*Understanding of load cases, materials, welded/bolted joints, and structural behaviour
*Strong communication, problem-solving and time-management skills
Qualifications
*Degree/HNC/HND in Mechanical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline (essential)
*Chartered Engineer status (desirable)
