Job PurposeTo lead, develop and manage the overall Wastewater Network Protection programme, focusing on reducing sewer blockages, flooding and pollution through:
*Driving initiatives to address domestic sewer misuse, including customer awareness campaigns and exploring enforcement opportunities, aligning to industry best practice.
*Delivering the FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) blockage prevention programme, managing contractor activities, and escalating enforcement action where required.
*Managing the drainage misconnections programme to reduce pollution and protect water quality.
*Supporting on third-party damage incidents to the wastewater network, coordinating cost recovery and mitigation measures.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities*Enforce sewer misuse rules for domestic customers and Food Service Establishments (FSEs), leading compliance and recharge actions where necessary.
*Monitor sewer misuse and FOG (fats, oils, grease) trends, directing proactive and reactive interventions in high-risk areas with operational teams.
*Manage contractors delivering network protection activities, ensuring strong performance, reporting, and alignment with internal procedures and strategic direction.
*Build and maintain strong relationships with external bodies (Environment Agency, Local Authorities, business groups), representing United Utilities on national and industry forums.
*Oversee the misconnections programme, support regulatory reporting, and collaborate with customer and media teams to raise public awareness of network protection activities.
Technical Skills & Experience*Strong technical/commercial background (degree or equivalent experience) with solid knowledge of wastewater services, regulations, environmental law, and key IT systems (M365, SAP, GIS, Salesforce).
*Proven leadership and people-management capability, able to balance customer service with enforcement demands and manage diverse activities.
*Advanced problem-solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to develop innovative solutions while challenging existing practices.
*Skilled in budgeting, negotiation, and influencing, with resilience and drive to deliver outcomes in complex operational environments.
*Clear understanding of United Utilities’ strategic goals, supported by excellent communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
