HIU Engineer - Hackney Borough Council Location: Hackney, London
Pay:£23.94 per hour PAYE / £32.26 per hour Umbrella
Working Pattern: Paid per job (Price-work model)
Contract Type: Temporary
Transport:Must have own van/transport & tools
About the Role Hackney Council is looking for an experienced and reliable Heating Engineer to support domestic and communal heating repairs, maintenance, and installations across the borough’s housing stock. This is a great opportunity for a skilled engineer who can work independently, deliver high-quality workmanship, and provide excellent customer service to residents.
This role operates on a per-job payment model, making it ideal for engineers confident in working efficiently while maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities *Carry out diagnosis, repairs, servicing and maintenance on domestic and communal heating systems, including boilers, radiators, and associated components.
*Complete planned and reactive heating works in line with council service standards.
*Ensure all work is compliant with current Gas Safe, building, and safety regulations.
*Deliver exceptional customer service when attending residents’ homes or communal buildings.
*Maintain accurate job records, certificates, and compliance documentation using council systems.
*Liaise with supervisors, schedulers, and other trades to ensure work is completed efficiently.
*Identify additional works required and report them through the correct process.
*Ensure all work is completed safely, cleanly, and to a professional standard.
*Manage van stock, materials, and parts effectively (materials provided for council work).
RequirementsEssential *Fully qualified Heating/Gas Engineer (e.g., ACS, CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1).
*Gas Safe registration (individual or via employer).
*Proven experience working in domestic heating maintenance and repairs.
*Own van/transport and full set of tools.
*Strong knowledge of fault-finding and diagnostics.
*Ability to work independently and efficiently within a price-work framework.
*Excellent communication and customer service skills.
*Ability to maintain high levels of professionalism in residents’ homes.
*Right to work in the UK.
Desirable *Experience working with local authorities or social housing.
*Experience with communal heating systems.
*Basic IT skills for job-logging and reporting.
