Financial Controller - Accountancy Practice
East London
Up to £85,000
A well-established and growing accountancy practice is seeking a Financial Controller to take ownership of its internal finance function. This is a hands-on, pivotal role suited to a practical and commercially aware finance professional who enjoys working within a team environment while delivering accurate reporting, maintaining strong controls, and supporting strategic decision-making.
Role Responsibilities
*Produce monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet reconciliations, and cashflow reporting.
*Manage the month-end process, ensuring accuracy and timely close.
*Prepare year-end schedules and support with statutory accounts.
*Support budgeting processes and provide clear variance analysis.
*Monitor and manage cashflow, identifying and escalating risks where necessary.
*Oversee billing, credit control, and debtor management, liaising with internal stakeholders.
*Process supplier invoices and manage payment runs, including direct debits.
*Maintain relationships with banks and key suppliers.
*Ensure robust financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance with HMRC requirements.
*Prepare VAT returns, payroll inputs, and other compliance-related tasks.
*Manage purchase ledger processes, including invoice matching, coding, and supplier queries.
*Line manage and support the Finance Administrator, including covering their duties when required.
*Drive improvements in finance systems, processes, and reporting efficiency.
*Provide clear financial insight to support business decisions, including basic modelling and profitability analysis.
Personal Requirements
*Part-qualified, newly qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) or qualified by experience.
*Strong experience producing management accounts and managing cashflow.
*Hands-on approach.
*Solid understanding of financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance.
*Advanced Excel skills (including VLOOKUP) and experience with Xero.
*Confident communicator with the ability to work closely with senior stakeholders.
*Experience managing or mentoring junior staff.
*Recent experience within a UK practice environment.
*Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or system/process improvements (desirable).
*Familiarity with IRIS or similar systems (desirable).
*Highly organised, detail-oriented, and proactive with a continuous improvement mindset.
