Financial Controller
Salary: £68,000 – £78,000
Location: Office-based
We are seeking a commercially astute, fully qualified Financial Controller (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) to lead the finance function for a growing SME business in Coventry. This is a key leadership role, working closely with the Managing Director and senior stakeholders to drive financial performance, strengthen controls and support strategic growth.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical capability with sound commercial judgement and a hands-on approach. Extensive experience within an SME environment is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Business Partnering
*Take overall ownership of the finance function, ensuring the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of all financial information
*Act as a trusted commercial partner to the Board, providing clear financial insight to support strategic and operational decision-making
*Deliver monthly management accounts with robust analysis, commentary and recommendations
*Lead budgeting, forecasting and long-term financial planning activity
*Monitor business performance against targets, identifying risks and opportunities
*Manage working capital, cashflow forecasting, debtor performance and supplier terms to support sustainable growth
*Provide financial oversight of projects, ensuring budgets, forecasts and margins are closely monitored
*Deliver project-level reporting, including cost analysis, margin tracking and variance reporting
*Oversee project billing, revenue recognition and accurate month-end project accounting
*Work closely with Project Managers to drive commercial awareness and improve project outcomes
*Ensure costs, labour and expenses are accurately allocated and controlled
*Support contract review, project setup and financial risk assessment
*Oversee purchase and sales ledger functions, ensuring strong processes and controls
*Manage banking activity, reconciliations and treasury operations
*Authorise payment runs with appropriate governance and segregation of duties
*Ensure timely and accurate VAT returns, payroll journals and statutory reporting
*Maintain effective relationships with auditors, HMRC, banks, insurers and external advisers
*Lead year-end processes and manage the external audit
*Lead, mentor and develop the finance team
*Set high standards for accuracy, accountability and professionalism
*Support succession planning and capability building within the team
About You
Fully qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA)
Proven Financial Controller or senior finance leadership experience within an SME business
Strong commercial acumen with hands-on delivery capability
