We are seeking a Port Health Officer to join the team at the London Gateway port on a temporary basis until March 2027. As a Port Health Technical Officer, you’ll support the control and management of imported food and goods entering the UK. Working independently or alongside experienced Port Health Officers (PHOs) and Official Veterinarians (OVs), you’ll help ensure imports meet legal, safety and public health standards.
This is a dynamic, operational role, combining computer-based work, inspections, sampling, and on-site port activity. You’ll regularly liaise with importers, agents, shipping lines and partner agencies, making key decisions and supporting official controls.
Day-to-day of the role:
*Managing emails, records and documentation relating to imported goods
*Using specialist systems (including PHILIS, IPAFFS, Destin8 and CNS) to process import notifications and controls
*Handling phone enquiries from importers, agents and shipping lines Calling containers for inspection, identity checks or seal checks
*Carrying out seal checks and low-risk ID checks in inspection facilities
*Supporting ship sanitation inspections and routine vessel boardings
Required Skills & Qualifications:
*Strong IT skills, including confidence using databases, Word and Excel
*A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
*Willingness to work a rolling shift pattern, including occasional out-of-hours duties
Important to Know
*The main base is London Gateway (Stanford-le-Hope, Essex), with travel to other port locations as required
*You must be comfortable handling food products and allergens (e.g. fish, nuts)
*The role involves physical activity, including lifting and working on your feet
*You’ll work in mixed environments — from offices to vessels, warehouses and inspection facilities
