We are recruiting for a Packaging Development Manager to join a leading fresh produce business based near Maidstone.
This is a hands-on role focused on developing, testing and implementing packaging solutions across a range of fresh produce categories. The role will involve working with packaging suppliers, packhouse teams, technical, commercial and operational colleagues to ensure packaging is fit for purpose, suitable for fresh produce packing machinery, cost-effective, sustainable and aligned with major retailer requirements.
The successful candidate will support packaging trials, shelf-life improvements, product protection, sustainability projects and new packaging innovation across categories including fruit, salads, exotics, berries, stone fruit, dates and nuts.
Key Responsibilities*Research and develop new packaging formats, materials and solutions for fresh produce products.
*Test packaging suitability on packing machinery and within fast-paced packhouse environments.
*Support packaging trials, shelf-life testing and product quality assessments.
*Work with suppliers to source samples, develop specifications and progress packaging improvements.
*Ensure packaging supports product protection, shelf life, sustainability and strong visual presentation.
*Support customer and retailer packaging requirements, approvals, specifications and artwork processes.
*Work closely with technical, commercial, procurement, operations and engineering teams.
*Identify opportunities to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability and support sustainability targets.
Candidate Requirements*Experience in packaging development, packaging trials, packaging technology or packaging specifications.
*Background in fresh produce packing environment preferred
*Understanding of packaging performance, shelf-life, product protection and machinery compatibility.
*Strong supplier management and project coordination skills.
*Good attention to detail with the ability to manage specifications, approvals and documentation.
*Practical, hands-on approach with strong communication skills.
Desirable*Fresh produce -food packaging experience.
*Knowledge of sustainable packaging, plastic reduction or recyclable materials.
*Experience working with major UK retailers.
*Understanding of flow wrap, punnets, trays, lidding film, sealing or similar packaging formats.
