Job Description:
Full job descriptionAn excellent opportunity has become available for a dedicated and compassionate SEN Tutor to support a Year 4 pupil with Autism and associated communication and emotional regulation needs. The pupil is currently working below age-related expectations and requires consistent, structured 1:1 support to build confidence, re-engage with learning, and develop foundational academic skills.
This role is based within a welcoming mainstream primary school in the London Borough of Croydon and will involve delivering tailored academic and emotional support designed to meet the individual needs of the pupil. The aim is to re-establish positive learning routines, strengthen core skills, and support successful engagement in classroom life.
We are looking for a tutor with strong experience in primary education and SEN support, particularly with pupils who present with Autism and/or SEMH needs. The ideal candidate will be calm, nurturing, highly patient, and skilled at making learning accessible through creative and structured approaches.
About The Role
The tutor will provide structured 1:1 support focused on both academic development and emotional regulation, working closely with school staff to ensure consistency across the school day.
The pupil requires support in:
*English (phonics, reading comprehension, early writing skills)
*Mathematics (number sense, basic operations, problem-solving)
*Communication and language development
The successful tutor will:
*Deliver engaging, play-based and structured 1:1 learning sessions
*Adapt lessons to suit SEN learning needs and attention span
*Use visual supports, repetition, and sensory-based strategies
*Build confidence in early literacy and numeracy skills
*Support emotional regulation and reduce anxiety around learning
*Encourage communication, interaction, and engagement
*Develop positive routines and learning behaviours
*Work closely with class teachers, SENCO, and pastoral staff
*Support gradual reintegration into classroom activities where appropriate
The role may begin with short, highly structured sessions and gradually increase in duration as the pupil’s confidence and engagement improve.
Learning & Support Focus
*Supporting smooth transitions between activities
*Using visual timetables and clear routines
*Providing sensory breaks when needed
*Reinforcing positive behaviour through encouragement and consistency
*Breaking tasks into small, achievable steps
*Supporting social interaction and play-based learning
*Encouraging independence in small, manageable increments
The tutor must be able to provide a calm, predictable presence and respond flexibly to the pupil’s emotional and sensory needs throughout the school day.
Hours & Flexibility
*Flexible working hours based on pupil needs and tutor availability
*Approximately 2–5 hours per day initially
*Sessions delivered during school hours in a primary school setting
*Hours may increase gradually depending on progress and engagement
