Job Description:
Full job descriptionCorporate Tax Manager
Location: Horsham
Working pattern: Hybrid, 3 days in the office / 2 days from home
Employment type: Permanent, full time
Half advisory. Half compliance. None of the "same portfolio, same work, every week" feeling.
Some Corporate Tax Manager roles are sold as advisory, then turn out to be 90% compliance with the odd planning query thrown in when someone is too busy.
This is not that.
The split here is expected to be around 50% advisory and 50% corporate tax compliance, which makes the role a good fit if you still enjoy the structure and client continuity of compliance work, but want more regular involvement in the technical, commercial and planning side.
You’ll be based in Horsham, working hybrid, and reporting into the Senior Management team and Corporate Tax Partner. The Corporate Tax team is around 25 people across multiple offices and forms part of a wider tax service line of nearly 100, so you get the best of both worlds: a close enough team to be visible, but enough depth around you to keep developing.
The work has some proper substance to it
The client base is varied: entrepreneurial growth companies, larger corporates, multinational groups, FCA-regulated businesses and AIM-listed PLCs.
That means the work is not limited to straightforward corporation tax returns. You’ll be reviewing complex computations, managing premium client relationships and helping UK and international clients structure their affairs tax efficiently.
Recent advisory work has included reorganisations, demergers, loan relationships, EIS schemes, R&D tax credits, employee share schemes, acquisition due diligence and advising on business sales.
That’s the hook here. You’ll still have enough compliance work to stay close to the client base, but enough advisory exposure to keep stretching technically.
Why Horsham?
The Horsham office is not just a small outpost. The firm’s local team provides accounting, business, wealth management and tax advisory services across sectors including charities and not-for-profit, academies and education, real estate, agriculture and manufacturing.
So you’re not stepping into a narrow local portfolio with limited reach. You’ll be working with clients across the firm, with occasional travel to other offices in Sussex, Kent and London where needed.
What you’ll actually be doing
You’ll be trusted to manage a diverse corporate client portfolio, keeping compliance work accurate and on time while spotting the planning opportunities that clients actually value.
You’ll act as the main point of contact for several premium clients, build strong relationships and become a trusted advisor rather than just the person who appears when a deadline is approaching.
You’ll also mentor and support three people within the Horsham Corporate Tax team, so this is a genuine Manager role, not just a technical reviewer title.
Day to day, that means:
*Reviewing complex corporation tax returns and computations
*Overseeing corporate tax compliance across clients of different sizes and sectors
*Supporting UK and international clients with tax-efficient structuring
*Getting involved in advisory work across reorganisations, demergers, EIS, R&D, employee share schemes, due diligence and business sales
*Acting as the main contact for several premium clients
*Working with colleagues across an international network
*Training and mentoring a team of three
*Managing deadlines, priorities and client expectations
*Travelling occasionally to client sites and other offices when required
The kind of person this will suit
You’ll probably be CTA qualified, or qualified by experience, with strong Corporate Tax experience already behind you.
You do not need to be the finished article on international tax. Exposure to areas such as double tax relief, tax treaties, transfer pricing, thin capitalisation and CFCs would be useful, but support and mentoring is available.
What matters more is that you can take ownership.
This is a fast-paced, deadline-driven role, so you’ll need to be organised, proactive and comfortable prioritising work without needing to be chased. You’ll also need to enjoy client contact, because you’ll be a key adviser to premium clients, not hidden behind someone else’s relationship.
You’ll be a strong fit if you have:
*CTA qualification, or equivalent experience
*Strong Corporate Tax experience
*Good UK corporation tax knowledge
*Experience reviewing complex corporation tax returns and computations
*Interest in advisory work, not just compliance delivery
*Exposure to international tax matters, or the appetite to develop this further
*Experience mentoring or training junior colleagues
*Strong organisation and priority management skills
*Confidence dealing with clients directly
*A proactive, can-do approach
*Willingness to travel occasionally when needed
What’s in it for you?
You’ll get the variety of a mixed advisory and compliance role, exposure to premium clients and the chance to build more international tax knowledge without being left to figure it all out alone.
The firm’s careers information highlights agile working, wellbeing, career development and flexible benefits, with a culture built around helping people grow and supporting balanced working lives.
The package includes hybrid working, 25.5 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, holiday buying, contributory pension, life assurance, health cash plan, income protection, private medical insurance, critical illness insurance, Employee Assistance Programme, counselling support, annual flu jab, discounts and rewards.
There are also family-friendly policies, monthly recognition awards, internal and external training, professional development support, paid volunteering time, charitable giving options, cycle to work and interest-free travel or vehicle loan options where applicable.
