Full job descriptionBusiness Services Senior
Salary: £35,000
Location: Borehamwood
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Working pattern: Flexible, hybrid working
Holiday: 20 days plus bank holidays
Employment type: Permanent, full time
Bookkeeping, VAT, management accounts — and clients who actually need your advice.
Some bookkeeping roles are exactly that: processing, reconciling, filing VAT returns, repeat.
This one has a bit more about it.
You’ll be joining the Borehamwood office of a fast-growing Top 20 accountancy firm, working with ambitious business owners who need proper day-to-day finance support, not just someone to tidy up the records once a quarter.
The role sits within Business Services, so you’ll be close to the practical side of client work: management accounts, VAT, CIS, ledgers, reconciliations, prepayments, accruals and statutory accounts preparation. But there’s also a more advisory side to it, particularly around apps, Xero, software support and helping clients improve the way they manage their records.
That’s the interesting bit.
If you enjoy being useful to clients, sorting out messy records, explaining things clearly and becoming the person they trust on their bookkeeping and VAT matters, this role should suit you well.
Why this is a good move
The Borehamwood team is growing, and this role has come about because the firm is expanding.
That means you’re not stepping into a static job where everything has been carved up for years and your only task is to inherit someone else’s workload. You’ll be joining a team with momentum, in a firm that has grown quickly and continues to invest in its people, service lines and client offering.
The wider business has more than 1,800 people across 60-plus offices, so there is scale behind you — but this is still a local office role where your work will be noticed.
You’ll also get study support, regular training and development, and the chance to keep building your technical skills as the firm grows.
What you’ll actually be doing
You’ll be supporting a portfolio of clients with the kind of work that keeps their businesses running properly.
That includes preparing management accounts, VAT returns, CIS returns, sales and purchase ledger processing, bank reconciliations, balance sheet control account reconciliations, prepayments and accruals.
You’ll also act as a key contact for clients on record-keeping matters, dealing with daily and weekly bookkeeping, VAT queries and software-related support.
There’s a technology angle too. Experience with Sage, Xero and related apps will be particularly useful, because part of the role includes providing app advisory support and delivering Xero training and guidance to clients.
You may also review or support outsourcing staff, so there is a bit of team development responsibility as well as client work.
The kind of person this will suit
You’ll probably already be working in an accountancy practice or outsourcing team, with strong bookkeeping, VAT and accounts experience.
You’ll need to be organised, practical and comfortable managing your own workload. Clients will rely on you, deadlines will matter and the work will need to be accurate.
You’ll also need to communicate well. This is not a back-office role where you never speak to anyone. You’ll be a primary contact for clients on their bookkeeping and record-keeping matters, so you need to be clear, helpful and confident enough to guide them when needed.
You’ll enjoy this if you like:
*Getting clients’ records into shape
*Preparing useful management information
*Handling VAT and CIS work accurately
*Supporting clients with Xero, Sage and related apps
*Being trusted as the day-to-day finance contact
*Working in a growing office where there is room to take on more
What would help you settle in quickly
*Practical experience gained within an accountancy practice
*Strong bookkeeping experience
*Experience preparing management accounts
*VAT return and CIS return experience
*Sales and purchase ledger experience
*Bank reconciliation and control account reconciliation experience
*Statutory accounts preparation experience
*Experience using Sage, Xero and related apps
*Confidence providing Xero or app support to clients
*Strong IT skills
*Good time management and the ability to work to deadlines
*Experience reviewing or training outsourcing staff
*IRIS Accountancy Suite experience would be useful
The package
You’ll receive a £35,000 salary, flexible hybrid working, pension, group life assurance at 4x salary, study support, access to an employee benefits portal with cashback and vouchers, an Employee Assistance Programme, referral bonus scheme, and regular training and development.
The firm is also focused on helping people progress personally and professionally, with careers information highlighting study support, development and support for personal goals and aspirations.
