Full job description
Technical Manager (Atomic Layer Deposition)
£45,000 - £52,500 + Generous Pension + Excellent Holiday Allowance + Flexible Working Environment + Professional Development + Conference Attendance + Long-Term Job Security
Are you a Postdoctoral Researcher, Research Fellow or Nanofabrication Scientist with experience of Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) looking for a long-term career opportunity outside the traditional academic pathway?
Do you want to remain hands-on with cutting-edge thin film and nanofabrication technologies while gaining greater job security, flexibility and work-life balance than a typical postdoctoral position can offer?
This is a rare opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading research institutions and take ownership of a specialist nanofabrication and cleanroom facility supporting world-class research across physics, engineering and advanced materials science.
The facility houses highly advanced thin film deposition and characterisation equipment, including Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) systems, supporting researchers working on cutting-edge scientific projects. You will work alongside academics, researchers and PhD students, helping develop fabrication processes, supporting experiments and enabling high-impact research.
Unlike many traditional academic career paths, this position offers the opportunity to continue working with advanced deposition technologies and cutting-edge research equipment without the uncertainty of short-term postdoctoral contracts, grant applications and the pressure of securing the next academic position. The role provides long-term stability while allowing you to remain technically involved in research and process development.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the cleanroom facility, supporting users, developing fabrication processes, maintaining advanced equipment and helping researchers achieve successful project outcomes. Whilst there is a management element to the role, this is primarily the management of a specialist facility rather than people management.
This role would suit someone with a background in Atomic Layer Deposition, thin film deposition, nanofabrication, advanced materials, semiconductor research, photonics or related research environments. Candidates are likely to come from postdoctoral, research fellow or university research backgrounds and be looking for a career that retains the scientific and technical aspects they enjoy whilst offering improved long-term career prospects, flexibility and stability.
The previous postholder came from a similar academic background and particularly valued the flexibility, autonomy and supportive environment the role offered. The organisation actively supports professional development, conference attendance and technical contributions to research outputs, creating an environment where technical specialists are recognised as key contributors to world-class research.
The Role
*Manage the day-to-day operation of a specialist cleanroom and nanofabrication facility
*Support researchers, academics and PhD students using advanced fabrication equipment
*Develop and optimise thin film deposition and nanofabrication processes
*Operate and maintain Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and other thin film deposition systems
*Deliver user training and technical support
*Manage facility scheduling, consumables and service contracts
*Maintain health & safety documentation, SOPs and risk assessments
*Contribute to research projects and scientific outputs
The Person
*Experience working with Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) systems
*Background in thin film deposition, nanofabrication or advanced materials
*Experience working within a cleanroom environment
*Postdoctoral Researcher, Research Fellow, Nanofabrication Scientist, Cleanroom Scientist or similar background
*Knowledge of thin film processing, deposition and characterisation techniques
*Strong understanding of laboratory health & safety and scientific equipment
*Looking for a long-term technical career within a world-class research environment
