Estates Technician / Engineer
Permanent - £32,000 - £33,675
Locations - Chelmsford & Basildon (static roles - not mobile)
Our client is seeking skilled and motivated Estates Technicians to join their Estates Maintenance team. The roles will be ’static’ and based at either Chelmsford or Basildon. Working across the wider hospital estate, you will play a vital role in ensuring critical engineering services remain operational 24 hours a day, supporting the delivery of safe and effective patient care
As an Estates Technician, you will carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, fault finding, and minor improvement works on a wide range of electrical, mechanical, and building services systems. Daily duties will include maintaining generators, fire alarm systems, lighting and power installations, boilers, air handling units, chillers, ventilation systems, hot and cold water services, medical gases, and associated infrastructure. You will respond to breakdowns, emergency situations, and critical alarms, ensuring services are restored quickly and safely.
The role requires strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical drawings, assess faults, and work independently with minimal supervision. You will also liaise with contractors, clinical teams, and departmental colleagues, ensuring maintenance activities are completed efficiently while minimising disruption to patient services. Accurate completion of maintenance records, risk assessments, and CAFM system documentation is essential.
Essential Qualifications and Experience*Approved apprenticeship in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
*Relevant City & Guilds qualification or equivalent technical qualification.
*Significant post-apprenticeship experience within a building services or maintenance environment.
*Recent hands-on experience maintaining electrical and/or mechanical systems.
*Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, safe systems of work, and risk assessment processes.
*Ability to interpret technical schematics and carry out complex fault diagnosis.
*Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
*IT literacy, including the use of maintenance management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable Qualifications*BTEC, HNC, or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
*Knowledge of NHS Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), including electrical safety, medical gases, ventilation, water systems, and lifts
