Full job descriptionWe are recruiting on behalf of an established accountancy practice in Manchester city centre. This is a predominantly compliance-led position, managing a varied portfolio of private clients, with genuine opportunities to become involved in advisory work alongside Partners and senior members of the tax team.
The role would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of a portfolio, reviewing work, managing deadlines and building strong client relationships. You will also have the opportunity to develop your advisory experience across areas such as Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, trusts, succession planning and other complex personal tax matters.

Duties and responsibilities
As Personal Tax Manager, you will take responsibility for managing a predominantly compliance-focused portfolio of private clients.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Managing a portfolio of clients including business owners, company directors, high-net-worth individuals, partnerships, families and trusts.
• Reviewing Self Assessment tax returns and ensuring all compliance work is completed accurately and within statutory deadlines.
• Managing the annual personal tax compliance cycle and monitoring workflow across the portfolio.
• Acting as a key point of contact for clients and building strong, long-term professional relationships.
• Responding to client queries and providing clear, practical advice on personal tax matters.
• Identifying advisory opportunities arising from compliance work and progressing these with Partners and senior tax colleagues.
• Supporting personal tax advisory projects, depending on experience, including Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, trusts, remuneration and succession planning.
• Managing HMRC correspondence, enquiries and information requests on behalf of clients.
• Reviewing the work of junior team members and providing constructive feedback, coaching and technical support.
• Delegating work effectively and supporting the development of less experienced colleagues.
• Monitoring deadlines, work in progress, recoverability and billing across the portfolio.
• Keeping up to date with changes in UK tax legislation and considering their impact on clients.
• Working closely with colleagues in accounts, audit and corporate tax to provide a joined-up service.
• Supporting Partners with complex client matters and the continued development of the personal tax offering.
Experience and qualifications
To be considered for this role, you should have strong personal tax experience gained within an accountancy practice.
You will ideally have:
• Previous experience managing or assisting with the management of a personal tax portfolio.
• Strong experience preparing and reviewing Self Assessment tax returns.
• Good technical knowledge of UK personal tax legislation and compliance requirements.
• Experience working with business owners, directors, high-net-worth individuals and other private clients.
• Some exposure to personal tax advisory work, or a clear interest in developing further in this area.
• Knowledge of areas such as Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, trusts or succession planning would be advantageous.
• Experience reviewing work and supporting junior members of a tax team.
• Strong communication and client relationship skills.
• The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver work within deadlines.
• A proactive, organised and commercially aware approach.
CTA, ATT, ACA or ACCA qualification would be advantageous, although candidates qualified by experience with a strong personal tax background may also be considered.
