A specialist boutique tax investigations and dispute resolution firm is seeking an experienced Tax Disputes Manager to join its growing team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a talented tax disputes professional to join a highly regarded advisory practice, working on complex HMRC enquiries, investigations, and tax dispute matters. The role offers exposure to a wide range of technically challenging cases, significant client interaction, and the opportunity to work within a collaborative specialist environment.
The successful candidate will have proven experience managing HMRC Code of Practice 8 (COP8) and Code of Practice 9 (COP9) investigations, with the ability to develop effective dispute strategies, manage client relationships, and negotiate successful outcomes with HMRC.
Key Responsibilities*Managing a portfolio of complex HMRC tax disputes and investigations from initial enquiry through to resolution.
*Leading COP8 and COP9 matters, including disclosure strategies, information requests, settlement negotiations, and resolution processes.
*Advising clients on dispute strategy, technical risks, potential outcomes, and engagement with HMRC.
*Liaising directly with HMRC investigators, technical specialists, and other professional advisers.
*Drafting high-quality technical correspondence, submissions, settlement proposals, and advice reports.
*Negotiating with HMRC to achieve commercially focused outcomes for clients.
*Building strong relationships with clients, intermediaries, and stakeholders.
*Supporting the continued growth and development of the firm’s tax disputes offering.
Candidate Requirements*Strong experience in UK tax disputes, investigations, and HMRC enquiry work.
*Essential: Demonstrable experience handling COP8 and COP9 investigations.
*Experience managing complex tax disputes independently and negotiating with HMRC.
*Strong technical understanding of HMRC enquiry procedures, disclosures, penalties, settlements, and dispute resolution processes.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients.
Desirable Experience*Previous experience working for HMRC, particularly within Specialist Investigations, Fraud Investigation Service (FIS), or compliance teams, would be highly desirable but is not essential.
*Professional qualification (CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent) would be advantageous.
*Experience advising high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, owner-managed businesses, trusts, partnerships, or privately owned companies.
