Reed is delighted to be recruiting for a Waste Management Operative on behalf of Leicestershire County Council. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced plant operator to play a key role in delivering an efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible waste management service.
Working as part of a dedicated team, you will operate loading shovels and other plant machinery, manage waste movements across site, and support the achievement of recycling and service performance targets.
The Role
As a Waste Management Operative, you will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of site plant and equipment, ensuring waste is processed, stored, and transferred efficiently while maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
*Operate loading shovels and other approved plant equipment to manage and bulk waste materials.
*Receive deliveries, verify documentation, and ensure all site activities are completed safely and efficiently.
*Load outgoing vehicles in line with customer and offtaker requirements.
*Use weighbridge systems and other site equipment to support daily operations.
*Maintain accurate electronic and paper-based records.
*Operate telehandlers and balers (following training and authorisation).
*Sort, compact, shred, and process waste using site equipment as required.
*Support site inductions and promote safe working practices for all visitors, contractors, and colleagues.
*Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
*Contribute to improving customer service standards and recycling performance.
*Support new team members and help drive continuous improvement across the site.
About You
We’re looking for a proactive and safety-conscious individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced operational environment.
Essential Skills & Experience
*Experience operating a loading shovel or similar heavy plant machinery.
*Strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
*Ability to maintain accurate records and follow operational procedures.
*Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, contractors, and site users.
*Reliable, flexible, and able to work as part of a team.
*Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Desirable
*Loading Shovel certification.
*Telehandler experience and certification.
*Experience within waste management, recycling, aggregates, logistics, or a related operational environment.
*Experience using weighbridge systems.
