We are seeking a dedicated Kitchen Assistant (Deputy Catering Manager) to oversee a Primary Schools Catering facility. The successful candidate will ensure the service meets the required standards and promotes lifelong healthy eating habits through the implementation of the school and SBC Healthy Eating Policies.
22.5 hours a week (8:30am - 1:30pm - Monday - Friday)
This is a temporary to permanent role:
Key Responsibilities
*Support the Catering Manager in meal production and service delivery, ensuring compliance with food hygiene, health and safety, and other statutory requirements.
*Help maintain the school’s reputation for high-quality food provision and the promotion of healthy eating.
*Assist with menu planning, ordering, stock control, storage, portion control, costing, and catering for special dietary requirements.
*Support the delivery of catering services, including breakfast clubs, break-time services, functions, and meal transportation where required.
*Set up, supervise, replenish, and clear food service counters.
*Carry out routine and deep cleaning of kitchens, dining areas, and equipment in line with Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.
*Supervise and direct kitchen/catering assistants, ensuring safe and correct working practices.
*Undertake skilled cooking duties and help provide healthy, nutritionally balanced meals that meet national school food standards.
*Monitor kitchen hygiene and food safety, including temperature checks, record keeping, and HACCP procedures.
*Support positive behaviour management in line with the school’s ethos.
*Assist with the induction and training of new catering staff, including cooking methods and health and safety procedures.
*Assume responsibility for managing the kitchen in the absence of the Catering Manager.
General Duties
*Comply with safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, security, and confidentiality policies, reporting concerns appropriately.
*Contribute positively to the school’s aims, values, and overall ethos.
*Work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals.
*Attend meetings, training, and development activities as required.
*Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
*Treat pupils, staff, parents, and visitors with courtesy and respect.
*Maintain a professional appearance and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive school environment that promotes equal opportunities.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
*Valid food hygiene certificate and advanced food hygiene certificate or working towards this (Essential)
*Proven experience in catering for 300-400 covers in environments such as schools, care homes, or similar (Essential)
