Trading Standards Enforcement Officer Required
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Trading Standards Enforcement Officer to join a busy Local Authority Trading Standards Team serving the London Boroughs of Brent and Harrow.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Trading Standards professional to deliver the full range of statutory Trading Standards functions, helping to protect consumers, support compliant businesses, and tackle unlawful trading practices across the boroughs.
The successful candidate will work within a customer-focused regulatory service, undertaking investigations, inspections, business engagement, and enforcement activities.
Key Responsibilities
Enforcement & Compliance
*Deliver the full range of Trading Standards statutory functions.
*Enforce consumer protection legislation and associated regulations.
*Investigate complaints and service requests from residents and businesses.
*Undertake inspections and investigations using the full range of enforcement powers available.
*Prepare evidence, reports, witness statements, and legal documentation where required.
*Conduct enforcement activities relating to:
*Fair Trading
*Product Safety
*Consumer Protection
*Rogue Trading
*Doorstep Crime
*Scams
*Underage Sales
*Weights & Measures (where suitably qualified)
Business Advice & Partnerships
*Provide advice and support to businesses to promote compliance.
*Support and maintain Primary Authority partnerships.
*Work proactively with businesses to improve standards and reduce risk.
*Deliver educational and preventative initiatives where appropriate.
Customer Service & Team Support
*Provide a professional, customer-focused service to residents and businesses.
*Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.
*Deputise for the Team Leader when required.
*Provide day-to-day support and guidance to colleagues as directed.
*Contribute to the achievement of both Council and Service objectives.
Essential Requirements
Experience
*Previous experience working within a Trading Standards environment.
*Experience conducting inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities.
*Knowledge of consumer protection legislation and regulatory enforcement.
*Experience handling complaints, service requests, and case management.
*Ability to gather evidence and prepare cases for enforcement action.
Knowledge
Strong understanding of:
*Consumer Protection legislation
*Fair Trading regulations
*Product Safety legislation
*Rogue Trading investigations
*Scam prevention and enforcement
*Underage Sales enforcement
*Regulatory compliance and investigation procedures
*Weights & Measures legislation (desirable and qualification dependent)
Skills
*Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
*Strong investigation and evidence-gathering abilities.
*Ability to manage a varied caseload.
*Customer-focused approach.
*Strong report writing and case management skills.
*Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
