Job Description:
Full job descriptionResidential Support Worker – Children & Young People
Some jobs give you responsibility. This one gives you the chance to genuinely matter to someone.
Our client operates children’s homes, a foster care agency, and schools throughout the UK. They’re looking for people who stay calm when things get difficult, consistent when life gets messy, and patient enough to build trust properly. That might come from residential care, youth work, education, the Armed Forces, emergency services, security or another high-pressure role. Or it might just come from who you are. Previous experience in residential childcare isn’t essential. What matters is your ability to build relationships, hold boundaries and show up consistently for young people who need adults they can rely on.
Their approach is built on one simple principle: potential, not perfection. That applies to the children they support, and to the people they recruit.
What you’ll actually do as Residential Support Worker:
The role is about giving children and young people the stability, support and ordinary moments of childhood many of us take for granted. You’ll build relationships, help them grow in confidence, and support them towards adulthood. Day to day, you’ll:
*Support children with activities, appointments and everyday life
*Help safeguard their health, wellbeing and safety
*Cook, clean, shop and get stuck into the normal running of the home
*Create routines and timetables
*Complete paperwork and write reports
*Work closely with colleagues to provide consistent support
It isn’t all cups of tea and meaningful chats. There’s washing up too. But the ordinary stuff matters, because consistency and adults who keep showing up make a real difference.
Who they’re looking for in a Residential Support Worker:
Not a mythical perfect candidate. Just people who are:
*Aged 22+ (Ofsted requirement)
*Caring, compassionate and able to build positive relationships
*Calm and level-headed under pressure
*Comfortable taking responsibility and working as part of a team
*Able to combine warmth with clear boundaries
*Willing to learn and develop
*Holders of a full valid manual driving licence
Experience in residential childcare, youth work, the Armed Forces, emergency services, security, education, sport or hospitality is welcome but not essential. What counts most is your character.
Training
You won’t be thrown in on day one. Their in-house induction programme includes two weeks of classroom training, a week of shadow shifts, and ongoing support as you settle in. You’ll also work towards your Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (achievable within 12 months), becoming a fully qualified Residential Support Worker with real opportunities to progress.
What you get in return
*Starting salary of £32,296 - £32,920 (including sleep ins)
*224 hours’ holiday, rising to 248 hours after four years
*An extra 3.5 days’ leave (birthday, wellbeing, volunteering, festive half day)
*Long-service awards: £200 (2 yrs), £400 (5 yrs), £600 (10 yrs)
*Up to £500 special recognition award
*MediCash cashback on dental, optical and physio appointments
*Chance to win up to £150 through monthly recognition awards
*Company pension scheme
*Fully funded training and qualifications, with genuine career progression
Could this be you?
You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. You do need to care, listen, keep your word and stay steady when things get tough. Trust with a child isn’t built through one grand gesture. It’s built by turning up, again and again.
If that sounds like work you’d be proud to do, we’d like to hear from you.
Successful applicants will be appointed subject to satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check. Our client is an equal opportunities employer committed to diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and routes into this work.
