Pay Rate: £20.00 + per hr paye depending on experience
Day-to-day of the role
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced and qualified Tree Officer to join their team on a full-time temporary contract for approximately 4-5 months.
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly knowledgeable arboricultural professional to play a key role in managing and protecting the Council’s diverse tree stock while ensuring public safety and promoting the many benefits that trees bring to the borough.
As Tree Officer, you will be responsible for the management of the Council’s tree stock, ensuring that trees do not pose a foreseeable risk to people or property in accordance with the Council’s Tree Management Protocol, industry best practice, and relevant legislation.
You will undertake proactive surveys and inspections across a wide range of locations including:
*Street trees
*Parks and open spaces
*Council housing stock gardens
*Council-owned woodlands
You will respond to enquiries from residents and elected members, provide professional arboricultural advice, and identify opportunities to increase and enhance tree cover across the borough.
Working closely with colleagues from Green Spaces, Development Control, and other Council departments, you will act as a strong advocate for trees and contribute towards wider environmental and community objectives.
Key Responsibilities
*Carry out visual tree assessments (VTAs) and risk assessments across the Council’s tree stock.
*Identify tree defects, structural issues, health concerns, and associated risk levels.
*Produce tree work specifications in accordance with BS3998 standards.
*Manage and monitor tree work contractors to ensure works are delivered safely and effectively.
*Respond to public enquiries, member enquiries, and stakeholder concerns.
*Provide detailed arboricultural advice to Council colleagues, partners, and the Local Planning Authority.
*Promote best practice in tree management and help raise awareness of the importance of trees within the borough.
*Support the Council in identifying opportunities to increase and improve tree cover.
Required Skills and Qualifications
*Formal Arboriculture qualification to Level 5 or equivalent.
*Professional Tree Inspector (PTI) qualification.
*Minimum 10 years’ experience carrying out Visual Tree Assessments (VTAs).
*Extensive experience identifying tree defects, poor structure, health issues, and associated risks.
*Experience creating work specifications in line with BS3998 standards.
*Proven experience managing tree works contractors.
*Strong understanding of legislation, statutory obligations, common law, and case law relating to tree management.
*Experience delivering excellent customer service to a diverse range of customers and stakeholders.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including face-to-face engagement, telephone, email, and formal correspondence.
*Experience providing professional arboricultural advice to colleagues, partners, and planning teams.
*Demonstrable experience managing and supervising others within an arboricultural environment.
*Basic DBS check.
*Full UK driving licence.
*Access to a vehicle for business use.
