FINANCIAL CONTROLLER – MOOR PARK GOLF CLUB
Hertfordshire, UK
Moor Park Golf Club is seeking a qualified and commercially minded Financial Controller to join its leadership team and play an important role in the continued development of one of Hertfordshire’s most established private members’ clubs.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Financial Controller will take responsibility for the day-to-day finance function while providing clear financial insight to support effective operational and commercial decision-making.
This is a visible, on-site role requiring someone who can combine strong financial control, management reporting, forecasting and planning with a practical understanding of the wider operation. Working closely with the General Manager and Finance Director, the successful candidate will have significant autonomy and the opportunity to modernise the finance function, improve systems and processes and support the Club’s future development.
ABOUT MOOR PARK GOLF CLUB
Set within 300 acres of Hertfordshire parkland, Moor Park Golf Club has a history spanning more than a century and approximately 1,575 members.
At its centre are two championship golf courses, The High and The West, both designed by Harry Colt in 1923. The Club also has extensive practice facilities, a well-established racquets section with thirteen tennis courts and plans for the addition of padel.
The historic 17th-century Mansion clubhouse provides a distinctive setting for dining, events and everyday member use and remains central to Club life.
Moor Park generates annual revenue of approximately £5.9m, including approximately £3.1m in subscription revenue and £1.2m in Food & Beverage revenue.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead the day-to-day finance function, supported by the Accounts Assistant, ensuring accurate, efficient and well-controlled financial processes.
• Prepare timely monthly management accounts with clear commentary and insight for the General Manager, Finance Director and Finance Committee.
• Lead budgeting, cashflow forecasting and P&L forecasting, identifying trends, risks and opportunities to support forward planning.
• Act as a commercially minded business partner to the General Manager and wider leadership team, using financial information to challenge, advise and support decision-making.
• Maintain strong financial controls and ensure the Club meets its accounting, tax, VAT, statutory and wider financial compliance obligations.
• Review and improve finance systems and processes, including opportunities for greater efficiency, digitalisation and enhanced financial reporting.
• Review payroll arrangements and advise on the most appropriate and efficient approach moving forward.
• Prepare financial reports and commentary for the Finance Committee and Board, attending meetings where appropriate and communicating financial information clearly to financial and non-financial stakeholders.
• Develop strong relationships with department heads and maintain a visible presence across the Club, improving financial understanding, accountability and performance.
• Work with a high degree of autonomy, proactively identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes, reporting and commercial performance.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The successful candidate will be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with strong technical knowledge and experience operating in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Management Accountant or similar senior finance position.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
• Strong commercial and operational understanding, ideally within a business with multiple revenue streams.
• Experience of management accounts, budgeting, forecasting, cashflow management and meaningful financial analysis.
• Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills, with the credibility and diplomacy to work with senior leadership, department heads, committees and Board members.
• The ability to translate financial information into practical commercial advice for non-finance colleagues.
• Experience reviewing and improving financial systems, processes and controls, including the effective use of technology and digitalisation.
• A hands-on approach combined with the confidence to operate with significant autonomy and take ownership of the finance function.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
Experience within golf, private clubs, hospitality, leisure or another service-led or member-based organisation would be advantageous but is not essential.
Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
HOW TO APPLY
