Full job descriptionBehaviour Support Teaching Assistant (1:1) - SEMH Secondary School
Tower Hamlets | Full Time | Long Term | Immediate Start
A specialist boys’ SEMH secondary school in Tower Hamlets is looking to appoint a resilient and engaging 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 11 student on a long-term basis.
The student is partially sighted and is able to navigate the school independently. The key focus of the role is providing consistent pastoral, behavioural and academic support, while building a positive and trusting relationship with him.
This is not a role for someone who is easily phased. The student has ADHD and can become verbally challenging when dysregulated, often using strong language. The successful candidate will need to remain calm, set clear boundaries, challenge inappropriate behaviour confidently, and act as a positive role model throughout the school day.
The Role
*Providing dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 11 student
*Supporting engagement in lessons and around the school
*Managing challenging behaviour in a calm, consistent manner
*Building a strong professional relationship based on trust and respect
*Working closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams and SEN professionals
*Encouraging positive choices, emotional regulation and independence
The Ideal Candidate
*Previous experience supporting young people with SEMH, ADHD or challenging behaviour
*Strong behaviour management skills
*Confident, resilient and able to maintain professional boundaries
*Able to build rapport with secondary-aged students who may be reluctant to engage
*Calm under pressure and not intimidated by confrontation or verbal outbursts
*Experience as a Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Youth Worker, Sports Coach or similar would be advantageous
*DBS on Update Service
The School
*Specialist boys’ SEMH secondary provision
*Supportive leadership team and experienced pastoral staff
*Well-resourced environment with a strong focus on student development
*Opportunity to make a genuine difference to a young person’s future during a crucial exam year
This role would suit someone with a strong presence, a sense of humour, and the ability to connect with young people while maintaining high expectations and clear boundaries.
Please submit your CV and a cover letter to apply.
