HGV Refuse Driver / Environmental Services OperativeKeep Our Communities Clean, Safe and MovingAre you an experienced HGV Driver looking for a role that offers variety, teamwork and a real sense of purpose? Join our Environmental Services team and play a vital role in keeping local communities clean, safe and sustainable.
This is more than just driving. You’ll be at the heart of frontline services, operating refuse collection vehicles, supporting waste and recycling operations, and ensuring residents and businesses receive an efficient and reliable service every day.
What You’ll Be DoingAs an HGV Refuse Driver / Environmental Services Operative, you will:
Safely drive and operate refuse collection vehicles, skip lorries and specialist cleansing vehicles in accordance with road traffic legislation, the Highway Code and Health & Safety regulations.
Lead and support waste collection crews, ensuring work is completed efficiently, safely and to the highest standards.
Collect household, commercial and trade waste, recycling materials and skips across designated routes.
Operate lifting equipment and vehicle machinery safely and effectively.
Complete daily vehicle inspections, defect reporting, tachograph records and operational documentation.
Use in-cab technology and management systems to record service information, route updates and operational issues.
Follow collection schedules, route maps and service instructions while adapting to changing operational requirements.
Provide guidance, instruction and support to colleagues, helping to maintain high standards of service delivery and safety.
Represent the organisation professionally when interacting with residents, businesses and members of the public.
Support wider environmental and cleansing operations, including loading duties and other frontline service requirements.
What We’re Looking ForEssential Requirements*Valid HGV Licence (Class 2 minimum)
*CPC Qualification and Digital Tachograph Card
*Strong commitment to Health & Safety
*Excellent driving record and knowledge of road transport regulations
*Good communication and teamwork skills
*Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
*Flexible and reliable approach to work
*Experience operating specialist vehicles or lifting equipment
Desirable*Previous experience in waste management, refuse collection, environmental services or local authority operations
*Experience leading or supervising operational teams
*Knowledge of route planning and vehicle compliance requirements
