Full job descriptionTechnical and Compliance Manager
Our privately owned client based in the Midlands is a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of electromechanical low voltage equipment, switchgear, switches and electrical engineering solutions. With a specific focus on their strengths in the UK and European rail, industrial and construction sectors, they are seeking a new Technical and Compliance Manager to support their continued technical strengths and direction.
The Technical and Compliance Manager will provide clear technical leadership and retain ownership of product strategy, product compliance, certification and technical governance. The role will direct engineering priorities, maintain product compliance and ensure significant technical risks and decisions are properly controlled.
Reporting the Managing Director and working closely with an existing quality, engineering and operations team, the Technical and Compliance Manager will have a core engineering strength - ideally within electrical components and systems, as well as have experience around product development, test and specification achievement.

Core responsibilities will include:
Technical Leadership and Authority
- Provide clear technical direction and ensure engineering priorities support business objectives.
- Act as the principal technical authority for significant decisions, product changes, design deviations and customer-specific solutions.
- Provide final technical approval where risk, novelty, compliance impact or commercial exposure requires senior review.
Product Strategy and Development
- Own the product roadmap and prioritise new products, improvements and significant customer-led developments.
- Provide direction on what should be developed, how it should be verified and which activities take priority.
- Ensure development projects have clear requirements, appropriate reviews and a controlled route to production release.
Compliance, Testing and Certification
- Maintain ownership of product compliance and certification across the product range.
- Determine applicable legislation, standards, conformity assessment and verification strategies.
- Ensure technical files, declarations, certificates, test reports and supporting evidence are created and maintained.
- Monitor relevant changes to legislation and standards and assess their impact.
- Oversee external testing and manage relationships with test laboratories and certification bodies.
Technical Risk and Governance
- Own significant technical risks, including product safety, design control, obsolescence, compliance and product change.
- Maintain proportionate controls for risk assessment, verification, validation, design review and release approval.
- Ensure technical governance is applied consistently and escalate material risks to the Managing Director.
Strategic Technical Support
- Provide senior technical input for key customers, major projects and strategically important opportunities.
- Review complex specifications and support technically sound and commercially appropriate solutions.
- Represent the company in significant technical meetings and support major product or compliance issues.
Engineering Process Ownership
- Own the engineering and product development framework, including responsibilities, approvals and escalation routes.
- Work with the Engineering Manager and other process owners to align day-to-day delivery with technical and compliance requirements.
- Define the technical competence and training needed to support products, standards and future priorities.

To support this role, you should have a strong understanding of low-voltage switchgear, control equipment or engineered electrical assemblies as well as good knowledge of product compliance, conformity assessment, technical files and engineering change control.
Being able to interpret relevant standards, including the IEC/BS EN 60947 series and IEC/BS EN 61439 where applicable, you will also understand design verification, risk assessment, wiring schematics, electrical installations and the IET Wiring Regulations.
This is a leadership role and therefore you will need to be confident and be able to make and explain technically defensible decisions as well as be commercially aware and able to balance compliance, technical risk, cost, customer requirements and delivery.
To support this success of the role, suitable candidates should be/have:
- Degree, HNC or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in technical leadership, product development, compliance and certification.
- Experience of developing low-voltage electrical equipment from requirements through testing, approval and production release.
- Experience of working with customers, suppliers, test laboratories and certification bodies.
