Job Description:

This local authority is currently seeking a Financial Controller to join their ambitious team on a permanent basis in this newly revamped role. Managing three direct reports across a larger team, you will be accountable for driving all things financial control and year-end, whilst also contributing to strategy and wider organisational development.
The key duties of this Financial Controller will include:
* Overseeing the preparation of statutory accounts and financial reports in accordance with local authority regulations.
* Collaborating closely with auditors to facilitate smooth audits and address any findings promptly.
* Providing strategic financial guidance to senior management, aiding in decision-making processes.
* Implementing robust financial controls and procedures to mitigate risk and enhance accountability.
* Upskilling and mentoring team members, conducting gap analysis on existing roles to ensure optimal performance and professional development.
* Drafting board papers and contributing to strategic discussions, aligning financial objectives with organizational goals.
This is a highly unique role for a technical finance professional who possess strong leadership skills and a background in local government, who is now looking to take the next step in their career. There is significant scope for the successful candidate to shape their role and team in line with their view of best practice, coupled with an unparalleled degree of autonomy, so you will not want to miss this. Furthermore, the role will officially be based out of their offices in Newbury, but opportunities to work from home will be on offer for up to three days per week.
The successful candidate will need:
* Professional qualification in accounting (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ACA).
* Proven experience in a financial management role within a local authority.
* Strong understanding of local authority finance regulations and accounting standards.
* Track record of liaising with auditors and overseeing the production of statutory accounts.
* Exceptional analytical abilities and attention to detail.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience in practice would also be considered, especially if you have a background auditing local governmental organisation and are looking to make your first move into industry!
